Overview of Cutting Wheels: Gearbox and Spherical Hob

To achieve optimal performance, a spherical hob must produce sufficient downforce, with each hob requiring at least 5 tons. In a wheel measuring 1200mm in thickness, there are a total of 54 hobs. Typically, about one-third, or approximately 18 hobs, actively participate in rock breaking, resulting in a required total pressure of no less than 90 tons. Consequently, each gearbox must be capable of supporting 45 tons of pressure, underscoring the importance of strong radial load-bearing capabilities.

The hob acts as a rolling rock-breaker, which means it operates without the need for high torque. For safety, the gearbox is rated for a torque of 150 kNm. Its output end features a tapered hexagonal design, allowing for quick and easy installation and removal of the cutting wheel.

The spherical hob employs two main types of fixed cutting tools: side hydromills and main cutting hydromills. Each trajectory line consists of three side hydromills and two main cutting hydromills. The design also includes a flapper tooth in a roller structure, which is both straightforward and effective. This innovative configuration offers enhanced force resistance compared to traditional machines, where the heavier flapper tooth structure often results in rapid wear of wear blocks and guide rings.
